My Cat Eats Grass
Visitor Question
When I let my cat outside, he immediately begins to eat grass. I worry because periodically my lawn is sprayed for weeds. Why is he doing this?

Hi Chris,
It's not entirely understood why cats seem to have such an attraction to grass, especially since they are mainly meat eaters. Veterinarians have a theory that eating grass provides extra fiber to help cats cough up hairballs and clear their digestive tracts.
It probably isn't a problem to let your cat have a little grass, but don't let him over do it. My real concern is the source of his grass. If your yard is sprayed with chemicals, then it's not truly safe for him to consume.
You have a couple of options:
- You can stop having weed control sprayed on your yard, and remove your weeds the old-fashioned way.
- Stop letting your cat out to eat the yard grass and offer him some grass grown especially for him. Many pet supply stores sell small kits with grass seed, soil, and a pot so you can grow your own grass indoors. You can also assemble these items at any garden store.
Hope this helps, and thanks for your question!

Hi Leon,
A cat's eyes will reflect light under certain conditions, which makes it look like the eyes are glowing red. The other possibility is that your cat has allergies to grass. Allergies are quite common in felines. I would watch your cat closely when exposing him/her to grass and other plants. Also, remember that some plants can be poisonous to felines.

To find a veterinarian, you may want to try online searches such as Vet Locator. I have also had good success in joining online groups for my area based on interest. For example, I might go to Yahoo Groups and type in the phrase "Southern Indiana choirs" or "Kentuckiana pet lovers". I would then join those groups and ask for recommendations of a vet in the area.
As for the plants, there are many. We have a wonderful article on this site that you may find helpful that details plants that are poisonous to cats.
