Cat Furniture

From LoveToKnow Cats

Kitty condos, cat mazes, cat trees and much more. It seems like our feline friends have as many furniture choices as we do! Buying furniture especially for your pet is a great way to let him play and exercise without leaving the home. It's especially useful if you live in a populated area where it would be dangerous to take your cat outside. You can choose from a huge variety of furniture with a number of different functions. Here are a few of the major types of cat furniture and what they're useful for.

Cat Trees

The next best thing to the oak outside your window, cat trees provide pets with an area to pounce, climb, scratch and hide in. There are literally hundreds of varieties of cat trees available, from lavish setups that can fill a small closet to simple carpeted posts with a platform on the top. Depending on your available space and the size of your cat, you can go with as complex a setup as you like. The more varied the surfaces are the more fun your cat will have. A great example of a lavish cat tree is the Kitty Hollow Cat Tree by CatsPlay.com. This great setup provides a lot of room to jump and play for one or more cats and doesn't look like a bland lump in your home.

Ultimate Cat Furniture - Cat Gyms

Similar in construction to cat trees, cat gyms are aimed more at exercise than fun and games. Most are constructed with lots of vertical surfaces for your cat to climb and are covered in a soft yet pliable carpet perfect for their claws. A great cat gym is the Paw Palace featuring several tiers of jumping platforms and hiding places. Turn your kittens loose on this piece of cat furniture and they'll be busy for hours. Well, at least 15 minutes...

Kitty Condos

Cats love to sleep as much as they like to play. Cat condos are small structures with a few climbing areas that are designed to give your cat a hidden, hollow space to sleep. Giving them their own space to curl up and take a nap in is a good way to pamper your pet. It's also a novel way to hide the litterbox from plain sight. The Lil Sandcastle Cat Lounger is a great example of a simple kitty condo.

Scratching Trees and Posts

The best way to keep your cat from turning your furniture into sawdust is to get a nice scratching post. There are a number of styles and varieties of scratching trees ranging from tall wooden spectacles to small rectangles of carpet on wood. The Z Scratcher combines vertical and horizontal areas for your cat to claw and looks like a piece of post-modern "human" furniture. Give them their own cat furniture and train them to leave your furniture alone.

Pet Carriers

Travel with your cat can be a stressful experience for both owner and pet. A good, comfortable carrying bag is absolutely essential for car, train or even plane trips with your feline. Doctors Foster and Smith have some great advice for acclimating your cat to a carrier and preparing her for travel. They also recommend a great personal cat carrier that's comfortable and easy to use for both owner and cat.
