Cat Toys
From LoveToKnow Cats
Cats, especially kittens, love to play. Not only is it a great way to exercise, but part of the joy of having a cat is watching it paw toys you dangle in front of them. From small stuffed mice to birds on a wand, there is an entire world of toys for your cat. Here are some our favorite cat toys, both household and store bought. Add your own favorite picks!
General Toy Recommendations
Cats will play with just about anything around your house. Keep things like string, paper clips and other tiny objects tucked away in drawers safe from searching paws. Instead, pick up one of these household items and turn it into a fascinating toy for you and your cat to play with.
- An empty cardboard box (or even a paper grocery bag) can be a great source of entertainment.
- If you're actively playing with your cat, snip the handles from a plastic bag and toss it around the room. Cats love to pounce on slow-falling bags. But keep an eye on your pet, as some cats will try to chew on the plastic.
- Link shower curtain rings together on a string. This noisy toy is great for adult cats.
- Old, soft stuffed animals are excellent comfort toys.
- Paper towel or toilet paper rolls work well as cat toys. Pull a sliver of the cardboard off the side and watch your cat go wild.
- Plastic balls are always good, but make sure they're strong enough to resist sharp claws. If you use ping pong balls, try tossing one in the bathtub.
Cat Toy Products
More complex (and often more entertaining, both for you and your cat) toys are available at many pet stores and online retailers for surprisingly little. Here are a few of the more popular products.
Panic Mouse 360
This innovative little cat toy has a wand attached to a movable arm that can bend in all directions. At the end is a small, soft toy that usually resembles a mouse. Turn the Panic Mouse 360 on and computer-controlled movements jerk the arm around in random movements, just like a real mouse.
Da Bird
A surprisingly popular cat toy from Go Cat, Da Bird is an aerodynamically designed feather toy that mimics the movements of a real bird. A weighted feather is attached to the end of a wand by a durable string. Simply dangle the toy in front of your kitty and get ready for him or her to go crazy! Da Bird retails for around $6.
SmartCat Peek-a-Prize Toy Box
The Peek-a-Prize Toy Box engages a cat's natural hunting instincts with a remarkably simple design. A number of paw-sized holes are cut into a small, flat wooden box. Simply fit a few soft balls (included) or one of your cat's favorite toys inside. Your kitty will have a great time looking for the toy and trying to get it out of the box.
Cat Claws Scratching Pad
Kittens and adult cats love to scratch everything in sight. These smart and simple scratching pads take the pressure off your furniture and supply your feline with a great place to hone her claws. The Cat Claws Scratching Pad is a unique texture in your home and is loaded with organic catnip to attract your cat's attention. An invaluable cat toy that is not only functional but practical.
