Figaro Cat Food
From LoveToKnow Cats
Figaro Cat food was a brand of canned food that was produced by Bumblebee Tuna. It is no longer being manufactured.
Ingredients in Figaro Cat Food
Cats often loved this particular brand of food. It was made from albacore tuna and was canned in large pieces so that it looked more like human food than cat food. The tuna was all natural and because of the lack of preservatives it was a natural, bright red color. Feeding finicky cats became simple for some people as they discovered this brand.
Ingredients in this cat food were mainly:
- Tuna and tuna by products
- Carrots
- Parsley
- Soybean oil
The only other additions were vitamins and other important nutrients for optimum cat health.
Production Stopped
Production was stopped on the Figaro cat food in April of 2009. The company has not released any statements at this time as to why the cat food was discontinued. There are rumors that the Figaro cat food had made several cats sick, but these rumors are not substantiated by any known facts.
If you have a cat that loves this brand, then you will need to get her to change to another brand. One of the benefits of Figaro was that it was a natural product. Your cat may make the switch easier if you can find a similar product that she likes.

Homemade Cat Food
Many cat owners just prefer to make their cat’s food at home. In this way they know what is going into the cat food and how healthy it is. There are a variety of opinions on homemade cat food with some vets saying that it is the unhealthiest way to feed your cat. On the other end of the spectrum are those that believe homemade is best.
If you are considering homemade pet food, be sure and research the pros and cons. Make sure you understand your cat’s nutritional needs and are comfortable with creating fresh food for her regularly.
Changing Diet
It is hard to get a cat to change from one food to another. In the case of Figaro food there may be no choice but to switch your cat to another brand. By reading other people’s recommendations and being willing to try several products you should be able to find your pet something she will be happy with.
Veterinarians recommend that you switch cats gradually to a new type of food. This may not be an option in this case. Most pet owners will have very little of the Figaro food left. You can add a little meat broth or the water from a can of tuna to try to entice your reluctant cat to eat. With patience and some time your cat will switch to the new cat food.

Hi Crowblog,
Thanks for the wonderful details on this food. It is good to get some insider information from a former Bumble Bee employee. I know many owners are still grieving that this food is not available. It's a shame Bumble Bee isn't producing it any longer.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardIt was also an invaluable food for some types of wild birds, because it didn't contain any chicken - one of the very few "non-poultry" pet foods. It could be used for crows, some types of seabirds, etc. I worked for Bumblebee back in the 1970's in Astoria, Oregon, and the catfood line had the very best odor, the fresh carrots were steamed, etc. at the time of canning. There was no wheat or other fillers included in Figaro even then (certainly not soybean oil, either, at that time). It was a quality product. It was primarily made with cooked tuna & cooked tuna blood, which was removed from "human" tuna prior to the canning process.
My inlaws had a cat that wouldn't eat anything but Figaro. So I bought Angie (short for "Angina" - "a pain") an entire case of Figaro, but she wouldn't eat it until it had aged in the can for 6 months... Naturally, everyone who worked at Bumblebee was followed around by cats ~~ -- Contributed by: CrowblogHi Miss Weather,
Many pet owners were upset over Bumble Bee's choice to discontinue Figaro. You may want to try the Natural Balance brand listed above as an alternative. It too is high in fish, so your cat may enjoy this brand as well. Good luck!
