Flavoring Cat Food and Treats
From LoveToKnow Cats
Our resident cat expert, Wendy Nan Rees, offers advice on how to make a flavorful spray for cat food and treats.
Flavoring Cat Food and Treats
Sometimes we just do not have time to cook or bake for our cats and yet we still want to give them a treat. There are also times when we notice our cats are not eating properly, and we need to find a way to tempt their appetites. I am here with a great, easy flavoring spray you can make and store in the refrigerator to use again and again.
I must also tell you this can make a wonderful gift, alone or as part of a welcoming basket. I came up with this idea years ago. Just recently I was going through my idea box and came across this recipe again. I have been making this recipe again for about six months now. and I have given many bottles away as gifts. So far, everyone has said their pets just loved it.
Simply Spray and Go© 2002 WNR
The equipment you will need is simple. Here is what you will need to make your own bottle of Simply Spray and Go©:
- A blender or food processor
- Between two and six empty plastic spray bottles: You can find these at many specialty markets, they can be ordered online and you can even find them at the drug store chains. There are several different sizes of bottles available, but the ones I have found that work the best are the ones that hold eight to twelve ounces.
Ingredients
- 1 8 ounce can of broth, either fish or beef flavored
- 1 tube of anchovy paste
- 3 tablespoons of fish flakes
- 2 tablespoons of dried parsley
- 2 tablespoons of sea weed
Place everything in a blender or food processor and blend until you have a smooth liquid consistency. If it is too thick and you need to add some water, then add ¼ cup of water at a time. Once you have a rather smelly smooth liquid that will flow nicely thru your spray bottle, you have made your own batch of Simply Spray and Go©.
Decorate the Bottle
If you plan to keep the bottle yourself, there's no need to decorate it unless you want to in order to distinguish it from the rest of your condiments. However, if you're giving the bottle away as a gift, a little decoration adds a nice touch.
For those of you who may be creatively challenged, there are many easy ways to decorate your bottle for gift giving. I personally like to use the glitter glue that comes in a bottle. I make sure that my bottle has a label that says “Must be refrigerated”. Then I put my bottle in a piece of tinted cellophane, gather up the cellophane and make a bow around the neck of the bottle with raffia.
You can make up your own name and label the bottle with it. You can also decorate your bottle with stickers and ribbons. You can even use a spare piece of fabric instead of cellophane and tie the neck of the bottle with a piece of ribbon. If you don’t want to go to that much trouble, you can even go to the store and get a gift bag, a bow and a gift sticker for your bottle.
This flavor spray will last two weeks if stored in the refrigerator. It can be frozen in a glass jar for longer storage, or you can use an ice cube tray, and take out cubes as you need them. They can be defrosted in the microwave.
I gave this recipe to my assistant Ruthie, and she has been making it for three weeks now. She tells me how much fun she is having with all her cats. You can spray their food to entice them to eat. You can also spritz their toys and hide them for your kitties to find. Use your imagination as to what you can do with this product; the sky’s the limit.
