Heart Disease in Cats
From LoveToKnow Cats
One visitor grows concerned after her cat's sister dies of heart failure.
Congenital Heart Disease in Cats
My cat's sister had to be put to sleep today, because she was diagnosed with congenital heart disease. Should I take my cat to the vet right away? Is it common for all of the litter to have this disease if one of them does? I read that most animals die before they are diagnosed with this. My kitten was a runt. Does this change anything? Her sister was way bigger. The vet says that the symptoms started to show because the sister was getting bigger and could not carry herself. Is this correct? I need to know what I should do. What would they have to do to figure it out if my cat has heart disease, and how much would it cost? Thank you! I am really worried, and I need help.

Hi Savannah,
I'm so sorry that this happened to one of your cat's litter mates. The disease can be hereditary, but that does not necessarily mean that your cat will develop the same health problems. Even if she does, it is possible to extend the cat's life with the right treatment early enough.
Early treatment is vital. I would probably go ahead and take her to the vet. Diagnosis of this disease might include:
- X-rays
- Testing the heart's electrical activity
- Electrocardiography
- Heart catheter
The cost of such tests will vary widely, depending on your area and your veterinarian. Your best course of action is to ask up front what tests your vet plans to run and how much they will cost. That way you will know if you can afford them. If you still want the tests but are on a budget, you may want to talk to the vet about a possible payment plan.
The problem with this disease is that often by the time a cat shows symptoms serious enough to go to the vet, it is too late to treat the cat effectively. That is why, even if she is not showing symptoms, it might be important to go ahead and have her tested. Plus, it will put your mind at ease.
Please check back, and let us know if she's okay.
