Homemade Cat Food Recipe Made with Fish
From LoveToKnow Cats
A homemade cat food recipe made with fish can add variety to your cat's healthy diet. Homemade foods can be time consuming, however, so you may want to use a combination of homemade cat food and commercially prepared foods.
Nutrients in Fish
Every type of meat contains slightly different nutrients. That is why it is important for your cat to have a variety of foods in her diet. Some of the nutrients in fish include:
- Protein
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Iodine
- Sodium
- Phosphorus
- Essential fatty acids
Although fish does contain calcium, it is on the low side so you may need to add calcium to your pet's diet if she will be eating primarily fish.
Resons to Avoid Raw Fish
Many experts recommend that you don't feed your cat raw fish. This seems a bit absurd considering cats do eat everything raw in the wild. However, it really is always best to cook the fish for the following reasons.
Thiaminase
In its raw state, fish may have high levels of an enzyme called thiaminase. This substance can create a thiamin deficiency. Symptoms are:
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting
- Trouble walking properly
Cooking destroys this enzyme and keeps your cat safer. Thiaminase can lead to paralysis and death so if you are going to feed your cat a raw fish meal, make sure that you feed a variety of other foods throughout the week. A cat may eat raw fish in the wild, but rarely will it make up the majority of a wild or feral cat's diet. A cat will eat a variety of prey.
Parasites
Raw fish can contain tapeworm and other parasites. When the fish is cooked, the parasites are killed and your pet is safe from them.
Bones
Small fish bones soften up when they are cooked. If you accidentally get a bone in your pet's food, it is much less likely to cause a medical problem than if the bones are uncooked.
Two Cautions
- Tuna is high in mercury and many veterinarians recommend that you limit the amount of tuna in your pet's diet.
- Too much fish can lead to trouble urinating in male cats.
