Kitty Birthday Party
From LoveToKnow Cats
I call this a kitty birthday party, but you don’t need an occasion to make a treat for your cat.
Cooking for Your Cat
With the pet food recall, I have had many people ask me how to cook for their cat. If you look back at my last recipe for homemade cat treats, I list some things that are very important for your cat’s diet, including Taurine, which is an amino acid.
I can’t stress enough to consult with a vet before cooking for your cat. Whether you are going to make this as a treat to incorporate into your cat’s diet or change your cat’s diet because of the pet food recall, you really need to work closely with your veterinarian. Understand that there are certain foods that should be avoided when you make your own cat food. Never feed your cat chocolate, alcohol, onions, pork (including bacon), raw fish, raw eggs, milk or bones. Each of these has its own ill effects on cats. You can include some small amounts of vegetables in your cat's food. Also, I like to add brewers yeast to my recipes.
A budget also comes into play when cooking for your cat. Sometimes all natural markets will have specials that can help keep the cost reasonable when cooking for your cat.
Carribean Duck and Fish Stew
Ingredients:
- ½ pound of cubed cooked duck
- ½ pound of cubed cooked chicken
- ½ pound of cubed cooked liver
- ½ pound of cubed cooked salmon
- ½ cup of chopped carrots
- ½ cup of chopped apples
- ½ cup of chopped garlic
- 3 tablespoons of dried sea kelp
- 4 cups of fish stock
- 3 tablespoons of flax seed oil
- ½ cup of chopped beets
- ½ cup of wheat germ
- ½ cup of cooked brown rice
- 1 bottle of clams and clam juice
This recipe couldn’t be any easier. The first thing you want to do is pre-cook your duck, chicken and chicken livers. I find that sautéing these in a fry pan with a little bit of olive oil is the easiest method. Duck tends to be very fatty, but if you take the skin off, you have very tasty dark meat, and it sautés quickly. Once it is cooked through, I pour everything into my dutch oven, including the brown bits. Bring everything to a boil on the stovetop, then put a top on it and simmer for 25 – 30 minutes. That’s it, it couldn’t be easier. Carribean duck and fish stew!
Additional Kitty Birthday Party Ideas
You may also add sweet potatoes to this kitty birthday party food. It gives the recipe a natural sweetness, something your kitty might like. This freezes beautifully in single serving containers. If you find you don’t have enough liquid during the cooking process, you can always add an extra cup of clam juice or even water. For even more kitty birthday party fun, have some carribean decorations and fishing pole toys, and your cats will be rocking!

Hi Melanie,
I have heard the same thing. I do know that the lady who wrote this article is a veterinarian, though, so perhaps based on the other quantities when it is all mixed up it is a small dose? It's always best to proceed with caution, though. I probably would just leave this out of the recipe, if I had concerns over it. At the very least, always double check with your vet.

Although it is not known specifically what kind of dosage causes problems, it is known that gastrointestinal issues and red blood cell damage can occur as a result of cats eating garlic. An occasional low dose, such as that in most commercial pet foods and treats, may not cause a problem, but because of the risk, it is generally recommended that you avoid products that contain more concentrated amounts of garlic, such as the quantities suggested in this recipe.

It is true that pine and cedar are toxic. Most experts think it is the oils in these plants that are toxic to cats and recommend not using Pine-Sol as a cleaner, in case the cat licks the floor.
Pine scented litter probably does not use pine oils, although I'd have to check the ingredient list to be absolutely certain.
