Natural Cat Food Recipes
From LoveToKnow Cats
Natural cat food recipes are those that are most similar to the way a cat would it in the wild. You can make your own foods, or buy commercially prepared foods that meet these requirements. Be careful though; just because a brand claims to be natural doesn't mean that it is.
Approximate a Cat's Wild Diet
It goes without saying that an undomesticated cat would not normally eat cooked foods. The prey would be eaten raw and complete with organs and small bones. Feral cats eat things like:
- Mice
- Rats
- Other small rodents
- Birds
- Snakes
- Lizards
- Bugs
- Contents of the digestive systems of their prey
Normally cats will not eat vegetables, although they will occasionally chew on grasses and herbs. It is also possible that they ingest some plant matter when eating their prey. However, this would be a minimal amount. It is also fine to feed your pet a cat treat once in awhile.
When a cat is fed commercial foods that include corn, rice, soy and ground chicken beaks, you can be sure that it is not eating a natural diet or even a healthy one.
Supplements
Many cat owners that feed a raw diet use some sort of supplement to ensure their pet is getting all of the nutrients it needs. These products are usually mixed in with raw meat as it is fed to the cat. The following are a few of the supplement products available.
- Feline Future is a complete diet for your cat when mixed with raw liver and raw meat.
- Alnutrin is made with amino acid chelates so that it can be absorbed more easily by your pet.
- Sojo's is a formula meant to be soaked in water and mixed with raw meat.
When these supplements are used as directed, your pet is more likely to receive all of the nutrients it needs for optimum health.
Ingredients for Your Natural Cat Food Recipes
Homemade natural cat food recipes are really quite simple:
- Fresh, raw meat
- Fresh raw liver
- Fresh raw fish; salmon is especially good
- A nutritional upplement
You would just grind these protein sources together and feed your cat normally. Obviously you would not want to leave raw meat sitting out all day, so just feed the amount your cat will actually eat.
Cats do not need a varied diet, but sometimes their humans feel better feeding a more unique food. Here are some ingredients that your cat may also enjoy.
- Probiotics added to your cat's food keep her digestive tract working properly.
- Soft cartilage and bone, ground well, add calcium.
- Cod liver oil gives your cat a healthy coat.
- Sprouted grains add fiber and B vitamins. Unsprouted grains can cause digestive problems in some cats.
- Antioxidant fruits added sparingly can build your pet's immune system.
- Cranberries
- Blueberries
- Apple
- A variety of herbs can add flavor, but garlic should not be used.
- Egg yolks
Feed Your Cat Safely
Remember that using raw foods is different than using commercially prepared dry foods. You will want to follow a few, simple safety rules:
- Remove any leftover cat food after thirty minutes. Either refrigerate it or throw it away.
- Use fresh meat. Don't use any meat that you are unsure of or that has a funny odor.
- Cats are not squeamish about organ meats, and they can be a healthy addition to the food. Remember though, liver acts as a filter for toxins in the body. It is best to use organic liver when possible, even if you are not using organic meats.
- Wash the cat food dishes after each meal.
- Label and date your cat's food.
- Use or freeze promptly.
There is no reason to spend a lot of money on cat food cookbooks and special recipes. Remember that cats in the wild do not add gourmet touches to their foods. Simple foods are best for your cat and easier for you to prepare.
