A Curious Sight

Now I know I live in Los Angeles, California, but after what I saw Saturday morning, I just had to come home and look online, and then look at all the new pet catalogs I have gotten in the mail and had not had time to open yet. Then I started to call all my cat owner friends!!

There I was, walking with my friend by the beach in Santa Monica, when all of a sudden I looked to my right, into the front yard of a very pretty beach house. To my big surprise, I spotted a very pink cage with multi-levels on wheels. Now if that wasn't startling enough, it had four cats all dressed up inside it!! YES, dressed up with hats and sunglasses. Not only that, two of the cats were wearing dresses and two were wearing shorts outfits!!

Now I was not the only person stopping to look and talk with the owners. It seems that every nice weekend, the owners take their four cats out, dress them up and let them enjoy the fresh air and people watch. How funny is this – the cats love to do the people watching, never mind we all stop to look at the cats! If I did not know better I would have thought, "Wow, am I at a zoo"? NO, I am in Santa Monica, California in front of someone's home!!

Questions Answered

The owners, let's call them M and J, were sitting on their front veranda in Adirondack chairs (also all pink), dressed up sipping some drinks. People were all asking questions at once, and we all had to slow down, to let each person ask one question at a time.

Do the cats like this? How often do you do this? Where did you find a pink cage with wheels and multi-levels? How did you find cat clothes? What ever gave you the idea to do this? I tell you the questions kept coming and the comments from the peanut gallery were something also (I was one of the peanut gallery members).

M & J were used to this and they loved answering all the questions. First of all, they wanted us to know this is not just a pink cage -- it is called "The Outdoor Kitty Traveling Condo." It comes in many colors, and they got the idea when one day, one of their four cats sat by the door just meowing to go out. They could not let the cat out, so they started to look for something that would keep their four cats safe, and still allow them to be able to go outside and get fresh air and enjoy the ocean view, without getting lost or hurt.

In no time, in a catalog I just happen to get also, they had found the 'Cat Cage' which folds for easy portability. The cost is $86.99 and it comes in two sizes, the standard size and the tiger size. They have wheels and a door so your cats can go in and come out easily, with two feeding stations, and a safety hook to hang some cat toys from. It also comes with four removable perches. The catalog says it is for any small animal, not just cats. They even sell a fleece bed that hangs like a hammock for comfort.

When M & J were asked where they found the clothes, and do the cats like to wear them, they responded: "Yes they love them, they never take them off and on the weekends when we are getting ready to go outside, they just start to get all happy and sit by the door." They had found the clothes all over. So when I got home I looked in the catalog, and to my surprise I found about 20 outfits for cats. Why not, we dress up our dogs, why not our cats? The clothes cost from $7.99 for a pink camouflage tee shirt to $10.88 for a dress. Sunglasses are available too for $4.50, and I found it all online and in my catalogs. They even sell kitty accessories for the collars and kitty socks for their feet. I was just amazed, because I never realized they made so many things for cats.

Fun for Cats (and You!)

After talking with M & J for about one hour, I came home to do my own research and to my further surprise, I found many styles of the portable cat cage, and the clothing styles surely have gotten better for cats. I asked all my friends what they thought about having a safe system to let their cats enjoy the great outdoors. I was amazed to find that they all loved the idea of a safe way to let kitty enjoy his or her time outside. Not only that, they would all love to look into something like what M & J had for their own cats. Here is what I do know: M & J’s cats LOVED it. If you think your cats may like to enjoy the fresh outdoors, or to travel with you (maybe you own a mobile home for traveling), then I say go for it. I now see it can be fun for the whole family, and who said our cats can't travel with us when we go camping or are just sitting on our front porch.

A Few Tips

Remember, do not do this when it is too cold or too hot for your cats to be comfortable, and always have plenty of fresh water for them to drink. If you have more than one cat, then have more than one water bowl, and be sure to have enough toys so they can share and have their own to play with. Find a nice partly sunny and shady place that is safe for you and your cats. Have fun with your family in the great outdoors.
