Mission: Organic Cat Food Recommendations

I want to give my cats an organic food, but I don't know which brand is the best for what I need. I have a cat who has had some urinary tract problems, so I know that low magnisum levels are important.

I want to be able to feed this food to the rest of my cats as well. I need both dry and canned food, so I would appreciate it if you could recommend a good one.

Hi Angie,

That's a tall order for a several reasons. First, government guidelines for what can be considered honestly "organic" pet foods are still being hashed out. Currently, pet food makers can include just one organic ingredient in an entire formula and write "organic" on the label. That makes it very difficult to sort out which brands are truly organic.

That said, I don't blame you for looking for alternative brands to what is usually offered on store shelves. My own quick research revealed two brands of cat food that had a relatively high percentage of organic components. Newman's Own Organics is about 70% organic, and Karma is reported to be 95% organic according to a report in USA Today.

As for the urinary tract health issue, canned food is more beneficial than dry because it helps your cat maintain the proper pH level in its urinaray tract system. And yes, lower magnesium contents are also better when addressing UT problems.

I have not been able to locate an organic cat food specifically labeled for use with recurring UTI's, so the best recommendation I can give is to compare the magnesium levels found in several organic brands and pick the one that is lowest. I also think talking this issue over with your vet is another good idea.

Thanks for your question, and good luck in your search. Let us know if you find a brand that fits your needs. There are probably a lot of other cat lovers out there who could benefit from the info.
