Orijen Cat Food

From LoveToKnow Cats

Orijen cat food is made by Champion Pet Foods, ltd. The company has been making high quality pet foods since 1975.

About Champion Pet Foods

Orijen is located in Alberta, Canada. The company uses fresh, local ingredients and is committed to providing high quality, optimal nutrition for dogs and cats.

Each batch of food is steam cooked at low temperatures to retain as much flavor and nutrition as possible. All of the pet foods that carry the Orijen name are made and processed at the Orijen factory. While some manufacturers may repackage or reprocess foods, Orijen never does. All of the ingredients used in Orijen cat food are human grade. This means that they are federally inspected and released for human consumption, and are of a higher quality grade than products general used in pet foods.

Ingredients in Orijen Foods

There are many different flavors of cat food, and therefore many different ingredients. Orijen uses hormone and antibiotic-free meat and poultry in their products, and the poultry used is grain-fed. Ingredients arrive at the manufacturer fresh on a daily basis.

Some of the ingredients used are:

  • Local, grain fed, free-range poultry
  • Wild caught fish from local lakes and rivers, caught using sustainable harvesting practices
  • Fresh, whole eggs
  • Fresh herbs and botanicals that are recommended by certified holistic veterinarians:
    • Chicory
    • Psyllium
    • Dandelion
    • Chamomile
    • Fenugreek
    • Alfalfa
  • Probiotics

Orijen foods are high in protein, low in carbohydrates and grain-free to allow your pet the opportunity to consume a more a natural diet. The company uses a 70/30 formula; 70 percent meat to 30 percent fruit and vegetables. The meat used is deboned to keep your pet safe from possible injury.

Orijen comes in two varieties for cats:

  • Poultry
  • Fish

Orijen Cat Foods for All Cats and Kittens

Cats have a digestive system that doesn't require much more than meat. Orijen formulates their cat foods with a minimum of 75 percent protein. The carbohydrates come from the natural botanicals that grow locally. These herbs are added to sooth the cat’s digestive system in a similar way to the natural grass chewing that cats do.

Using a variety of oils fulfills your cat’s needs for Omega-3 and Omega-6 acids. These oils and fats include:

  • Sunflower
  • Flax
  • Chicken
  • Anchovy
  • Salmon

These oils promote healthy skin and a silky coat in your cat.

Feeding Your Cat

Your cat will need to eat less of the Orijen because of the high quality protein in the food. You should discuss your cat’s diet with your vet to get his recommendation, but as a general rule you should feed Orijen in the following amounts:

  • Cats up to three pounds should be fed approximately one-fourth of a cup daily.
  • Cats from four to six pounds should be fed one- third of a cup of food daily.
  • Cats over six pounds should be fed about one-half cup daily.

Consumer Ratings and Recent Recall

While consumer ratings for this food are high, with most customers being very happy with it, there are a few that are displeased. Orijen initiated a voluntary recall of their cat food because cats were becoming ill, experiencing paralysis and dying. The only link was to the Champion Pet Foods, and specifically Orijen.

The company suspected that the problem was a result of irradiation. Consumers weren’t so sure. You should read about Orijen’s link to cat deaths before you decide on this food.

Although many pets have eaten Orijen cat food and done very well with it, others have experienced a variety of health problems. Be sure to read all of the information associated with the recall and discuss your concerns with your vet.
