Finding Siamese Kittens in Oregon

Siamese cats are undoubtedly one of the most popular breed of cats, and is it any wonder? Siamese have it all: beauty, brains and "purrsonality" plus. If you want a cat that is not only interested in what you have to say, but will actually talk back to you, you can't go wrong with a Siamese.

Although you may feel ready to take the plunge, kittens are not always easy to find. Siamese are always in demand, and breeders sometimes don't have any young kittens to offer. If you're going to have a chance of finding anything in the Oregon area, there are a few things you need to do first.

Narrowing the Search

You can begin to narrow your search by considering what you're really looking for.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Which kind of Siamese are you looking for? Siamese come in two distinct types.
    • Traditional: This is the type of Siamese that was most prevalent up through the 1970's. They are cobby, with just about the same type of head as a Tabby. Breeders also refer to this type as "apple heads," "classic" or "old-style".
    • Show: This extreme style of Siamese has come to prominence in the last 20 years. These Siamese are quite elongated in body and legs. Their heads have a distinct wedge shape that is clearly different from the apple head type. Breeders commonly refer to this type as "wedges."
  • Which color do you prefer? Although bodies are basically shades of cream, the Siamese's extremities, referred to as "points" are shaded darker than the rest of the body. A short list of colors available includes:
    • Seal Point
    • Chocolate Point
    • Blue Point
    • Lilac Point
  • Do you want a male or female? Unless you have some specific ideas about breeding, either sex makes a nice pet. Neutering and spaying will help address issues such as urine spraying and heat cycles.

Once you have made some decisions on what you want in a Siamese, it's time to start looking for a breeder.

Tips for Finding Local Oregon Breeders

If you live in Oregon, then of course you'll want to begin your search locally.

You might locate Siamese kittens by:

  • Checking the pet section of your newspaper
  • Calling one of the local cat clubs
  • Calling a Siamese rescue organization
  • Calling a few vets to see if they can connect you with clients/breeders
  • Running an Internet search for "Siamese kittens in Oregon"

Siamese Catteries in the Pacific Northwest and California

Finding a Siamese breeder in Oregon with kittens ready to go may not always be possible. If you find this to be the case when you are ready to look, you may need to widen your search to the general region.

LoveToKnow Cats did our own search for Siamese breeders in and around Oregon and here are a few of the results we found.

Katko Siamese

This cattery, located in Bush Prairie, Washington, is actually within driving distance of Portland, Oregon. Carol and Herb Maxey raise Siamese kittens, and their close cousins the Balinese and Burmese.

The starting price for a Katko kitten begins at $450.00, and can go up from there depending on the quality of the kitten and the rarity of the color. According to their website, the kittens are registered through CFA, TICA and ACA.

Permese Cats

Permese has two locations, one of which is in Poulsbo, Washington. They breed traditional apple head Siamese in many of the standard colors, and also the less common Lynx Point. They also offer kittens in other related breeds.

According to their website, Permese kittens are registered with the CFA, and the registry has honored them as a "Cattery of Excellence." Their kittens come with a health guarantee against genetic defects, and a general 72-hour health guarantee in the event your kitten becomes ill in the first few days after you bring it home.

The average price for a pet quality Siamese kitten runs between $600.00 and $800.00. Lynx Point kittens start at $1,000.00.

To-Pher

Widening our search to California, To-Pher Siamese and Balinese Cattery is located in Suisun City, near the Bay area.

Each kitten receives at least its first shots, and is dewormed and micro-chipped. Kittens also come with food and litter kits. To-pher Siamese kittens are CFA registered, and the cattery will ship kittens within the USA. You will need to contact them directly for pricing, but they usually have kittens available year round.

Cattails Cattery

Located in Coarsegold, California, Cattails offers Siamese kittens in the standard colors and the rarer flame point.

Kittens are CFA registered, and prices for pets begin at $500.00. Breeding quality Siamese sell for $1,200.00 and up. Shipping is available at an extra charge, according to each kitten's destination.

Purchase with Caution

Hopefully, you'll now be on track for finding Siamese kittens in Oregon and the greater West Coast region. Remember, it is up to you to carefully screen any breeder you choose to do business with. A cattery may present well in a top notch website, but you can't be sure of what you're getting or who you're dealing with unless you visit the breeder in person.
