Taste of the Wild Cat Food
From LoveToKnow Cats
Taste of the Wild cat food is formulated with unique protein ingredients and contains no grain products.
Cats Have Unique Nutritional Needs
Cats need protein. However, they don't do well on plant based proteins. In fact, illnesses stemming from dietary deficiencies are on the rise. Diabetes in cats is becoming almost as prevalent as it is in humans. Other problems include:
- Urinary tract calculi
- Anemia
- Obesity
Carbohydrates
Cats should not get many grains, but the food should rely on certain vegetables for a feline's low carbohydrate needs. The Taste of the Wild Pet Food Company has created their cat food using vegetables to provide carbohydrates.
Vegetables include:
- Sweet potatoes
- Peas
- Tomatoes
- Chicory root
Blueberries and raspberries are added for their antioxidant qualities.
Proteins
Proteins are provided from natural meats like smoked venison, chicken and salmon. It is important to note that all of the protein sources are meat based. Many companies use soy and other plant based proteins that are not beneficial for cats.
Benefits of the meats used in this cat food:
- Hormone free
- Antibiotic free
- Human food grade
- Chicken is from the meat and ground bone only, not the feathers or internal organs.
Other Ingredients
Taste of the Wild cat food includes other ingredients to round out the nutritional profile. These include:
- Probiotics like Lactobacillus acidophilus for a healthy digestive system
- Essential amino acids
- Chelated minerals
All Natural, but Not Organic
This cat food, both the dry and the canned variety, is all natural, meaning there are no chemical additives. However, this does not mean that the food is organic. The vegetables and fruit contained in the ingredients have more than likely been treated with pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The company makes no claims about this, nor does it list the chemicals it uses anywhere on the label or its website.
Many pet owners have become increasingly concerned about chemicals and additives in pet foods. With the numerous recalls in the news over the past few years, there may be worries that a pet's health may be compromised by the food that it eats. If this is a concern for you, you may be more interested in an organic cat food or a homemade cat food recipe. Organic pet foods, like other organic products, will often cost more money. A fifteen pound bag of the dry food will cost twenty dollars or more.
The cat food also may contain an ingredient called ethoxyquin. This is found in many pet foods, but it's use is controversial. In fact, it is so controversial that companies that produce pet foods without it say so on the package. Ethoxyquin is believed to be a cause of cancer in animals. If you are looking for a cat food without this substance Orijen states that they do not use it.
Taste of the Wild Cat Food Is Made By Diamond
While Taste of the Wild feline formula seems to be an excellent food for your cat, it is important to note that the company that owns it is Diamond Pet Foods.
Diamond is a large pet food manufacturer that had many of its products recalled in the past few years. The problems seem to be solved, and Taste of the Wild was not one of the products that had been recalled. Most of the recalls were due to contamination of the rice products in the foods. Since Taste of the Wild cat food doesn't have any grain products these recalls did not apply to this brand.
