About Videos for Cats

If you're like most people, you probably enjoy watching a good video now and then. It's an entertaining way to relieve boredom when there's nothing else interesting to do. Did you ever stop to think your cat might enjoy a little feline television of his own?

Yes, there really are videos specially made for cats. Have a cat who gets anxious whenever you're not around? How about a cat that freaks out during thunderstorms? No matter what you need to distract your cat from, playing videos for cats can help keep your pet occupied when you need it most.

These VHS tapes and DVD's are created to appeal to your furry friend in a number of ways. Let's learn how.

Kitty Vision

Unless you happen to be color-blind to some degree, when you look at a television screen, you see red, blue and green, or combinations of these basic colors. When a cat looks at a TV, he sees something slightly different.

Cats aren't able to see colors in the red spectrum the same way we do. Reds tend to wash out to varying shades of grey, and often get lost against similar colors. This means a cat may miss some of the same objects we can see on the screen, and what a cat can't see isn't likely to interest him.

Images

Your cat has simple tastes. An evening with the Boston Pops might not get much reaction from him, but the sight of a hamster running around its cage is probably going to catch his attention.

Cats are interested in looking at animals that they consider "prey". If you've ever watched your cat stalking a creature in the back yard, you'll recognize that look of complete concentration. The best videos for cats will evoke the same response.

Be aware that the size of those animals on the screen will affect your cat in different ways. Animals that appear smaller than your cat are generally greeted without fear, but enlarge a harmless canary on a big screen TV, and suddenly your cat is looking at a predator, not prey.

Soundtracks

Think about it. If you were a cat, what would you be more likely to listen to? Squealing cars chases? Oprah hawking her new favorite book? Not likely.

Cats want to hear what interests them, and what really interests them is the sounds of certain other animals and insects. Birds chattering, mice squeaking, flies buzzing, and oddly enough, other cats calling are all music to a cat's ears. However, cats do not enjoy the sounds of dogs barking, elephants trumpeting, or any other animal noises that they might interpret as sounds of nearby danger.

Length

No matter how great a video for cats may be, your pet's interest will wane in a relatively short span of time. Yes, there are marathon videos and DVD's that will run for hours on end, but don't expect your pet to sit in front of the TV the whole time. Select an interesting video that will run approximately one to two hours, and realize that your cat may watch only thirty minutes of it and not necessarily all in one sitting.

You Can Lead a Cat to Water...

Can anyone guarantee your feline will actually watch a video? No. As we all know, you can't really make a cat do anything it isn't inclined to do on its own, but if you make your choices based on the tips above you just might find videos for cats that your pet will actually enjoy.
