World's Best Cat Litter
From LoveToKnow Cats
World's Best cat litter is one of the more unique cat litters on the market today. Instead of being made from clay, newspaper or silica, World's Best is made from whole kernel corn.
Concerns with Litter
Many of today's clumping litters use sodium bentonite. There has been a lot of debate as to whether or not this type of litter is harmful to cats. Some owners fear that the cat may ingest the clay while grooming, and it will clump in the stomach or impact the lungs. There haven't been any clinical studies done on the effects of bentonite, so there is no firm proof one way or the other. However, many owners are on the lookout for healthier, more natural, alternatives and this is where litters like World's Best come in.
Why Does World's Best Cat Litter Use Corn Kernels?
World's Best cat litter is created using whole corn kernels that are ground fine. By using corn, the company has created a biodegradable litter thath can be flushed down the toilet (even used with septic tanks) or recycled as mulch. The litter clumps on contact with urine making litter box clean up much easier than with some litters. Christie Keith, of the San Francisco Chronicle, makes the statement that World's Best is the best non-clay litter that clumps. She also recommends Feline Pine as another safe cat litter. It is also silica and bentonite free, easing concerns of illnesses that might be created by those ingredients.
Concerns
While the name may say that it is the world's best, some cat owners have expressed concerns over a few issues with this brand of litter.
- Texture: Some cats don't like the texture and refuse to use the litter. The best way to overcome this is to switch your cat slowly, introducing 25 percent of the new litter to 75 percent of old and adding 25 percent new with each litter change. So, the first mixture would contain 25/75 (new/old), the second 50/50, the third 75/50 and final 100 percent new litter.
- Price: World's Best is one of the pricier litters on the market at about $20 for a 17 pound bag. If you live in a multi-cat household and need to change the litter more frequently, this cost can be downright prohibitive.
- Natural Not Organic: Even though World's Best is natural in that it uses natural, biodegradable ingredients, the company does not use organic corn. This is a concern for some cat owners who worry that the corn used may have chemicals and pesticides that might ultimately cause health issues with their cat.
- Dust: Almost every type of cat litter tracks some type of dust and debris into your home. Some reviews from independent consumers seem to indicate that this litter can be messy if you have a cat that likes to track litter around. Some cats track litter worse than others, and some litter boxes seem to allow more tracking than other boxes. One alternative is to put a mat in front of the box or purchase a box with stairs that cut down on the amount of litter being tracked into your home.
Types of World's Best
The company offers a couple of different options when it comes to purchasing their litter. They offer their regular clumping formula cat litter and a special formula for multiple cats. The litter is available in a variety of sizes from seven pound bags to 34 pounds. The litter can be used with self-cleaning litter boxes as well.
Ultimately, the only way to decide if this or any other litter is right for your cat is to give it a try. The advantages of this litter seem to outweigh the disadvantages, so it is definitely worth taking a look at as a possible litter for your cats.
