Hi Mary Beth,
I think you should take him to the vet immediately. If he is straining to urinate and acting out, there may be a problem. It is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to male cats and urinary tract issues. Let us know if he's okay.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardHi there, I just had my one year old, male cat neutered 4 days ago. He seems to be doing fine except a few things. He will squat, as if he is going to pee, and not go. He does this quite frequently; in the plant, liter box and when I supervised him outside. He then went pee on our bed! Is this some kind of resentment?! He has gone pee and pooped in his liter box since the neutering. Not sure if this is something that happens after neutering? Not sure if I should be worried.
-- Contributed by: Mary BethHi Emma,
It sounds like Rosie is in a lot of pain and acting out. Again, I'd separate them for about a week and see if that helps the situation. If not, then you may want to try the technique for introducing a new cat into the household listed on this site and see if that helps. I think things will get back to normal soon.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardHi Jaclynna,
Cats often do recognize one another from smell. It sounds like your male is reacting to the scents from the vet's office. I'd keep them separated for about a week. This will also allow your female some time to heal. They will likely readjust as the smell wears off and after this amount of time, but if not, please let me know. I'll come up with some additional ideas for you :)
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardhi everyone, my cat rosie is 3 yrs old, she had one litter 7mths ago, and was spayed 16 days ago. since coming home from the vet she has been attacking her beloved (weretotally inseperable) kitten. The kitten really misses her, but rosie is going out of her way to find the kitten to attack her. why could she be doing this. she is a ragdoll and has a really soft nature usually, and hasbeen like this since coming home from the vet. i gave rosie some space for a few days to recover but she is still being very vicious, and the kitten is terrified. please help i dont know what to do
-- Contributed by: emmaI just had my 2 year old female spayed. Since bringing her home my 4 year old neutered male has been excessively aggressive. Prior to being spayed the two cats played and tolerated each other well. Is this simply because of the separation (1 day) or smells from the vet or is there more to it?
-- Contributed by: JaclynnaHi Susie,
The fleas are the most likely culprit. Treat him for those and it will likely begin to clear up on its own. Hope that helps!
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardHi, My cat's 2years and was operate don at 6 weeks. Last year he started to lose his hair.Frontline was used and it started growing back. This year he has shed again, not treated this time. his tummy, legs and a dig out on his side. He's been given tablets by the vet and the process is slow in coming. I've noticed he has fleas. He's an outdoor cat and has 2 dogs as our other pets. What can be the problem?
-- Contributed by: SusieHi Kylene,
Perhaps your cat smelled the other animals from the vet's office on the recently spayed cat. I wouldn't worry too much. They'll likely re-adjust. Just keep them separated until the cat that is healing is feeling better to protect her from any attacks.
Since it has only been a couple of days without them defecating, I wouldn't worry just yet. If they haven't gone by Monday, then you will probably want to phone your vet and get the cats in to find out what might be going on.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardHello. I have two questions. I have two cats. One was fixed when I brought her home but the other wasn't. They are both indoor cats only but the one cat was in hear and driving my famly nuts. We decided to get her fixed as well. She went in on a Tuesday and cam home on Wednesday. She was also declawed at the same time because our other cat is declawed as well. Anyways when I brought my cat home my other cat hissed at her and spit at her but missed her like crazy when she was gone. She would look all over the house for her and was what seemed to be sad. Here it is Friday (the same week she went to the doc.) and my cat is still being mean to her. Do you know why? Also since she came home neither of them have had poo at all. Should I be worried? Thanks for your time. Kylene
-- Contributed by: kyleneHi Help Needed,
It's possible that your cat is in pain. He shouldn't be crying and shouldn't be chasing after female cats. When a male cat is neutered, they remove all functions that would create those hormone surges. I would go ahead and take him back into the vet and have him checked over. It is possible he has a minor infection and needs antibiotics, or is in some type of pain.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardHi there, my male cat (+- 5 years old) was neutered on Friday and since Saturday night he has been crying consistently. I know it is time for female cats to be in season in our area (South Africa) at the moment. How long will it be before he stops taking interest in female cats in the area? He's crying is driving us mad. Please help.
-- Contributed by: Help neededHi Ceci,
It is actually fairly common for neutered male cats to act in this way. Some owners give their male cats stuffed animals and they are quite happy with that solution. Since this is an instinctive behavior, it may be hard to change, but you don't want to let him behave inappropriately in front of company, so use your best judgment. He will also likely adjust to the new cat's presence over time, once he realizes she is not going to put up with his behavior.
The other option is to have the vet test his hormone levels and make sure they aren't out of kilter. I would give him a little time to adjust first, however. Perhaps a month or so. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardI have a nine year old male cat. He was found as an adult, the vet guessed about three years old. He was neutered at that time. He has always had a very sweet disposition but he has the tendency to hump the bed covers. Recently we got a female cat. He is extremely sexually interested in her and tries to mount her. She is spayed and refuses his advances. This almost seems to depress him. He used to be extremely playful and now he's not. He will sometimes watch her from the bed and hump the covers. What do I do?
-- Contributed by: CeciCan a neutered cat spray once he has been neutered
- Hi Pat, yes a cat can still spray urine after neutering, although with the reduced hormones, many cats give up the behavior.
Thanks for your question.
-- Contributed by: Pat Van DorenI had my cat Lizzie spayed in October of 2007. she is still showing signs of being in heat even after the spaying. What could be wrong with her and what can I do about it?
- Hi Olivia, this is unusual behavior for a cat that has been spayed. I think it would be best to ask your vet to take a look at her and check her hormone levels. Then you'll have a better idea of what's going on and your vet can decide what to do next.
I hope it all works out, and thanks for your question.
-- Contributed by: oliviaHi Paula,
It could be worms or possibly a flea. You'd be surprised at the havoc a single flea can cause. The commercially available dewormers only treat some types of parasites. It is possible that it did not rid your cat of worms. Your best bet is to take a fecal sample, in a brown paper bag, to your veterinarian and have it tested. This is usually fairly inexpensive. If she does have worms, the vet can diagnose what type and give you the proper medication and dosage based on her weight at her last visit.
If it turns out to not be worms, then I would ask the vet for some further testing. She is likely in pain if she is trying to bite.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardI have a three year old female cat that we had spayed about one year and a half years ago. She was a very loveable cat and would want to play with us constantly, she is very smart and wouldseem to want to be with us and want to play fetch a lot. At first we did not see any changes in her behavior but then about nine months ago she began to get very testy and would growl at us, but then when she wanted attention she would cuddle up in our laps (more so my husbands). Lately she has gotten more testy than ever and for some unknown reason she will start growling and chasing her tail like it is hurting or something and she will not allow us to touch it and has even bitten me and attempted to bit me many times. I thought it could be worms or something like that and so I got some dewormer but that has not detoured her cycle of going round and round with her tail and the constant growling. I have to put her outside when my grand kids come over. Please help! Little bits Mom
