Hi Kevin,

I would go ahead and take him to the vet immediately. It sounds like the vet needs to look at the wound and make sure it is healing okay. Also, there may still be some infection. The scab really shouldn't fall off until the wound is healed, so what you're describing sounds like something to be concerned over.

He may need a stitch or two or simply some bandaging and ointment. Better safe than sorry in these cases, since infection can get into the blood stream. Please check back and let us know if he's okay and what the vet says.

Hello, Last week my cat came home with a scratch on his nose. a few days later it started scabbing in a big area. I took him to the vet they said it was an infection as he had a fever and was dehydrated. They gave him a subcutaneous shot and put him on antibiotics. He seemed to be doing better but now the scab is falling off and its taking his skin off with him(mostly his nose) i don't know what to do i'm very upset what could this be and should he get that skin stitched back up. it's very distressing as he pretty much has no nose now on his right side and its giving him trouble eating and drinking.

Hi Yasmina,

I'm sorry to hear that your cat is so ill. It sounds very uncomfortable for him. What does the vet say? I would just continue with the antibiotics and if necessary switch to soft food. Make him as warm, comfortable and loved as possible.

My cat have a awful facial infection, he lost a huge part of his nose, and its maxilar, the upper part of its mouth, and he also suffers from a conjonctivite. He is very old. I don't know how he could eat, he eat a lot more than before. I continue the fight with antibiotics until the end, and i refuse to euthanise him. But the infection is so deep. How can I make him suffer less? Many thanks

Hi Sherry,

Regular soaps can really dry out a cat's skin. I would try to avoid that if at all possible. If her skin is particularly dry, the baths may be worsening her condition. You could try not bathing her for a while and see if her skins natural oils will help her begin to heal. If you are bathing her due to allergies, then you may want to try a gentle, oatmeal shampoo formulated specifically for cats.

The scabs concern me a bit. Is it possible she has picked up fleas while darting outside? I would go ahead and treat her for fleas, just to be on the safe side.

Also, if you notice any of the following symptoms, please take her to the vet as soon as possible:

  • Lethargy
  • Lack of appetite
  • Loss of thirst
  • Change in litter box habits

I hope that some of these ideas work and the cat feels better soon. Her fur loss could be caused by any number of factors. I hope you are able to narrow it down and figure out which one.

My cat too has scabs and is losing hair. It is mainly on her back and sides, none on the mouth or ears or chin or legs, just her back and sides. She has started to poop in odd places like the tub and on the floor right next to her clean litter box. I have taken her to the vet and although its been about a year, she had shots, gets a bath about once a month and I use frontline flea drops on her and she wears a flea collar. She does go outside as soon as she sees an opportunity and being that I live on the 2nd floor and leave the bottom door open to carry groceries out once a week, she darts out. Is there anything I can do to treat her myself? I really cannot afford a vet. She doesnt appear sick and I also noticed a sticky substance where the hair falls out. Could it be from the monthly baths I give her? Last time I did bathe her, I ran out of her shampoo and used an almost gone bar of Dove...? This has been going on for about 2 weeks now, or should I say thats when I noticed it.

Thanks, Sherry

Hi Sandy,

My suspicion is that it is some kind of parsitic infection that you would need to have your vet diagnose in order to treat. Is this cat tame enough for you to handle and transport? If so, that's the route I would take. I hope you can find out what it is so your cat gets better.

Hello, We have a five-year-old neutered male barn cat that has developed black scab like substance around his nose and down to his mouth. I believe he got this last year, but it is worse now. He has all of his shots, is acting and eating normal what should we do? He looks horrible. Since he is orange and white it really stands out.
