Hi Paula,

It very probably is dry skin and irritation from the heat. You can try a couple of things. First, make sure she is getting plenty of Omega-3s in her food. Next, brush her every day. This will distribute the oils secreted by her skin more evenly. Finally, if that doesn't help, invest in a good humidifier.

My cat starts to scratch at her neck and around her ears around this time of year. She is an indoor cat, gets treatment for fleas and does not wear a collar. I check her for any rashes or fur being pulled out but I don't see or feel anything out of the ordinary. This seems to happen this time of year when I start turning on the heater. Could it be dry skin? She received a clean bill of health when I took her to the vet in September.

Hi Kayla,

I wouldn't use baby oil on your cat. For one thing it might make him/her too oily. The cat will likely lick the baby oil off too which can cause digestive issues. Instead, try to find an oatmeal based shampoo, which will be gentle and help your cat's skin. Always buy items specifically formulated for cats (a cat shampoo) as so many items are toxic to felines.

Hi Pat,

It could be overgrooming, a collar irritating him, allergies or dry skin. I would continue with the treatments. The bandage is probably the biggest key to preventing him from reopening the wound. If you can just get it healed, it will likely stop irritating him and he'll live it alone.

Our cat, Simby, a B&W british short hair scratches his neck continuosly and ha open a wound which we are trating with a cream and bandage around his neck. He has continue to scrat at the other side of the neck. We have taken him twice to the vet with no result and he has not got fleas. Is this a case of overgrooming, or dry skin? what can we do?

Any advice very appreciated. Pat
