Hi Donna,

It sounds like he may possibly have some allergies that are setting off respiratory issues. Since it is related to particular times of year, that seems to make the most sense. Think about anything you might bring into the house during that time and eliminate it if possible. You could also have him allergy tested at the vet. This would tell you specifically what he is allergic to.

I have a Siamese cat and every fall/winter, he starts to wheeze. It starts out once a day and then it usually goes to 5 times a day and then I land up bringing him to the vet for a steroid shot. This has been going on for 6 years now and I cannot pin point what sets this off in him. Any suggestions?

Hi Deb,

Is he neutered? He may be trying to spray and mark things. If he is not neutered, I would go ahead and get him fixed as soon as possible. First, it will prevent unwanted kittens. Second, it will help him settle down and not stray as far from home.

If he has been neutered, watch him closely and make sure he is using the litter box the way he should. Male cats have a tendency for kidney stones, which can be fatal if left untreated. Otherwise, he may just have a little quirk.

I HAVE A CAT THT MY SON FOUND ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHEN HE WAS JUST A LITTLE BITTY THING. I TOOK HIM IN AND HE WAS A HAPPY KITTEN. HE GOT ALONG WITH MY DOGS AND USED THE LITTER BOX AND ATE JUST FINE, NOW HE HAS BEEN HERE FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS AND HE HAS DEVELOPED A REALLY STRANGE BEHAVIOR. HE HAS STARTED PUSHING HIS BACK LEGGED UP AND DOWN AND MEOWING VERY LOUD WHILE HE DOES IT. I THOUGHT HE WAS HURT BUT I PICKED HIM UP AND HE SEEMED FINE AND WHEN I PUT HIM DOWN HE RAN AROUND JUST LIKE NORMAL. BUT HE STILL DOES THIS WIERD THING WITH HIS BACK LEGS EVERY NOW AND THEN. I'M NOT A CAT PERSON, I HAVE ALWAYS HAD DOGS SO THIS IS JUST STRANGE TO ME. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THIS BEFORE AND SHOULD I BE CONCERNED?

Hi Ray,

Does he do this all the time or only after he has been still for a while? If he is doing it all the time, he could have a minor injury. Cats can sometimes hurt themselves jumping off a bed or couch. If the cat lands the wrong way, it can get hurt. It isn't common, but as cats grow older they are less agile than younger cats.

I would go ahead and take him to the vet and get this checked out. He may need a dose of steroids to help him heal or it could be another, underlying problem that needs treated.

Hello,

I have a 13 year old cat who seems to be walking funny for the past month. He walks a small distance and then stops and sits. It is almost as it he is having a hard time with his back legs. He is an indoor cat and never goes out and he has not sustained any injuries. I am wondering if it may be old age stiffness setting in. He is eating, drinking, and moving his bowels normally.

Ray
