Hi April,

Thank you so much for adding your first-hand experience with this wonderful breed. Your pet sounds like a delight.

I have a foundling american bobtail. She was about a year old when I found her, and greatly enjoyed knocking glasses off the counter when bored, but has otherwise been an absolute delight (as long as you wear your shoes in the kitchen). She is almost 4 now, and being less kittenish, only seems to break the glassware when I'm out of town.

They do need a fair amount of entertainment and attention, but if you have it to give, they are such loves. She will greet me at the door when she hears the car in the driveway, will respond to her name, and will charm strangers in seconds. She also talks a lot! The personality is exactly the same as the japanese bobtail, but the american is stocker and tends to have a "jacked-up chevy" look from the side (much higher hindquarters than forequarters). Except for a tendency to get a bit chunky around the midsection, she's never had any health problems. They're really active ... it's an unfortunate quirk of genetics that they tend to hold some extra weight, even with reduced food intake and an all organic cat food diet.

Hi, Kiroro,

There are many rescue leagues, depending on where you live. Try the Purebred Cat Breed Rescue Organization to find a listing of Japanese Bobtail rescue orgs. Good luck!
