Hi Liz,
He sounds truly magnificent. What a wonderful change from an abusive home, to a shelter to being the most spoiled kitty in the world. He's a lucky fellow to have found you. Tell your husband not to despair. My Siamese was aloof from my husband for thirteen years before she decided she was crazy about him. There's still hope.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardI aquired a Maine Coon a couple of years ago. He is a rescue cat. He is a big baby. A bit suspicious of strangers and very much a Mumma's Boy. He is still a bit leary of my husband and we came to the conclusion he had been abused before going to a very nice no-kill shelter. He is spoiled rotten with an outdoor area to play in and the birdfeeders to watch through the window. Kitty sleeps with me curled up at the foot of the bed or on the pillow beside me. He likes to carry around toys and put them into his food and water dishes. Another trait for the breed. They are the "Gentle Giants" of the cat world.
-- Contributed by: LizHi Marilyn,
Without knowing the cat's genealogy, it is hard to say for sure whether or not she is Maine Coon. She may have some of the characteristics, however and you can decide whether she has those or not. You can find several pictures on this website and this very page, for example. You may also want to phone a local Maine Coon specific rescue center and talk to them about tendencies to look for in your cat. It sounds like a successful adoption at any rate. I hope you and your cat have many wonderful years together.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardHi,we accuired a cat from the cat rescue, thought it was a normal happy go lucky tabby untill my daughter suggested that it looked like a maine coon.Could I send you som photos and could you tel me if Rosey is that particular breed. thankyou Hope to hear from you soon.
-- Contributed by: marilynHi Charlotte,
Maine Coons love people, so it's no surprise that they enjoy cuddling in your bed. They sound very sweet. You could always purchase a larger bed too :)
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardI have two Main Coon cats that are brothers. They are incredibly friendly and both insist on sleeping with me at night (one on each side of me). Considering their size (one is 12 pounds, the other 15), it seems they take up more of my bed than I do. I wouldn't trade either one of them for the world. I've had them now for 13 years, and hopefully for a long while to come!

You don't mention how old Rocky is or if he has been neutered. Likely neutering and maturing will help him out of some of his issues. However, he'll likely never be a lap cat. You may be able to teach him to enjoy sitting by your side, however, by offering treats and such.

Remember that cats respond best to positive reinforcement. When he is loving and affectionate, give him lots of praise.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardMy Rocky, a male coon cat/siamese mix is 18 lbs, gray mix with blue eyes. My vet told me his coat is so thick, he would have no trouble living outdoors through our long, Maine cold winters, great mouser but not lap friendly. Likes to fight with my other 2 cats but otherwise, it has to be his idea as to what to do. People are shocked at his size when they come into my home, not fat, just big, long and lean. He was rescued from very bad living conditions and has a good home with us. His personality could use big improvement.
-- Contributed by: MariaHi Esther,
It sounds like he may have some Maine Coon in him, but it's hard to be certain without knowing his parentage. I suspect you're correct, though. I have had cats that I know had Siamese in them, because of their behaviors and lean look. It sounds like he is quite a character. I'm sure you are enjoying his unique tendencies and cute personality.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardI have a cat that i adopted from a friend. His name is sasquatch. He is a poltdactle and already weighs 20lb.He will be 2yrs.old in march. He has very unusal ears.they look more like Bobcat ears.He is not a fat cat but long and lean. He was born in Pa. but we now live in Indiana and he loves to play in the snow.He also makes the oddest noises that sound almost like bird chirps.I knew there was more than just domestic tabby as the vet calls him and when a friend of mine mentioned Maine Coon cat to me I found your web site and learned alot. Tho I can't prove it I would put money on the fact that he has maine coon in him somwhere. This is a great web site thank you I learned alot. Esther

I'm so glad we could be of help. Sasafrass sounds absolutely gorgeous!
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardWow! This web page has been the most insightful guide to getting to know my kitten that I have found. Me and my two daughter's adopted a 5 week old stray 5 months ago. He's beautiful! The very first time we had him groomed the gromer complimented his looks and asked if we knew his breed. When we indicated no, she was almost certain that Maine Coon was somewhere in his lineage. After reading your site I am convinced that our Sasafrass is indeed a Tabby/Maine Coon mix. His actions, attitude and looks solidify this. Thanks!
-- Contributed by: ShirleyHi Dana,
It's hard to say as the genetics can be inherited from a generation or more back. The cat may not even have many characteristics from the father cat. He very well may have some Maine Coon in him, but without a pedigree on both sides, it's impossible to say. He sounds like a very sweet cat, so whatever mix of breeds, it must work :)
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardDear friends, perhaps you can solve a slight delima that I have. I am currently trying to determine the breed of my cat. His mother was my cat (tabby/manx mix) and she birthed him in my home. However I do not know what breed of cat fathered my cat, Bear. He is a large boy, 16lbs, tuffs of white fur in his ears, brown tabby markings, large feet, and his personality is mostly like the general description of a Main Coon aside from is unrendering need to be with me constantly and loving to cuddle. He will be 3 this spring. So, let me know what you think. Thanks. -Dana
-- Contributed by: DanaHi, Vivdell,
It sounds like he is probably fussing a bit over the change in surroundings. Cats, generally, do not enjoy traveling with owners in the same way that dogs enjoy this type of thing. They are very much creatures of habit and any big change makes a cat nervous. There are always exceptions to this, of course. I have seen people travel in RVs with cats just fine. I'm not sure if it is dependent upon cat personality or that they train the cat as a kitten, but it does seem to be the exception to the rule.
As long as he is eating and drinking and using the litter box without problem, I would just keep a close eye on him. He should settle down within a few days more than likely. You know his behaviors better than anyone, so just watch for any major changes, if you're concerned about health issues.
He sounds like a wonderful cat. Hopefully he'll settle into his new surroundings quickly.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardMy Maine Coon is probably about 12 yrs old. He had been passed down to 4 different homes before we took him in about 1-1/2 yrs ago, and he has been nothing but a pleasure! He "talks" a lot. We took him with us to our beach house over Christmas and he seems to be meowing a lot. I get up to check his water & food bowls. He's fine. I check the litter box. Always in good shape. Do you think he isn't used to the surroundings, even though he is with us all the time? I checked his teeth to see if there was bleeding (none). I pressed his body to see if he complained (none). What do you think this is all about? Thank you.
-- Contributed by: VivdellHi, Okki,
Mylo sounds absolutely adorable. Some cats like to snuggle more than others. I have one who loves it and one who loathes it. The one who hates being snuggled is similar to Mylo. She wants to be close to me, just not in my lap.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardMy Main Coon (Mylo) is a 1.5 y/o male and 11Lbs. he wont snuggle much, but always lays within a foot of me on the couch and sleeps at my feet during the night. He took a while to hget used to the daily brushing, but with a cat-treat once he is done (and has behaved well) he's gotten quite used to it. however, even with daily brushing, he does develop knots every once in a while which we either cut (using surgical scissors) or shave (using a beard trimmer) out of his furr. He's one loving big lug though!
