Hi I am worried that my two year old ragdol is shedding all year round. I brush him everyday for at least half an hour. I get a brush full of fur everytime and there is still fur all over the house, sometimes big clumps. He has beautiful shiney soft fur and is not bald. He doesn't have fleas and I feed him Iams dry food. In the year I have had him he has only had two fur balls. Can you Please give me some advice?

Hi Kate,

I have to admit that it is pretty funny to picture you being held hostage in the kitchen by your cat. Sounds like she can be loving and a loyal companion too, though. I have owned enough cats in my life to know that they each have a distinctive personality. Gremlin sounds like she has quite a unique one.

When I read about them being gentle, serene and friendly I had to laugh. I have a 4yr old ragdoll called Gremlin (she lives up to it), who can sometimes be gentle, though often acts psychotic and vicious. Her fav past time is to corner me in the kitchen and not let me out! But honestly, I love her antics (most of the time) and wouldn't change her...she's always there when I really need her comfort.

Hi Hadley,

Just about any cat sheds somewhat, especially breeds with longer hair. There are some things you can do that will help quite a bit with shedding, but you'll likely still need to keep up on the hair, especially with two cats in the home. I've owned cats my whole life and it's one of the very few cons of cat ownership, but they are well worth the extra ten minutes of cleaning here and there.

To reduce shedding, brush them every day without fail. This will help to remove loose fur in a controlled way. It will also help prevent hairballs, because there will be less loose hair for the cats to ingest while they are grooming.

You will also want to switch them to a high quality cat food, which will reduce shedding as well.

If you are concerned about health issues, you may want to have the cats checked out by a vet before agreeing to take them on. It will give you peace of mind as well.

My Husband and I are looking at adopting two ragdoll cats. They were originally purchased at a pet store and not through a breeder. We've gone to see them and they shed excessively. I've read that this is not typical of the bred and am wondering if they may have health problems. As well, we are wondering if there is anything we could do to curb the amount of shedding. Thanks very much for your input!

Hi Kyle,

Once the cat is mixed, it isn't really a purebred anymore, but there are many variations and cross mixes among breeds. Sometimes, this is how a new breed is created, like the Munchkins. It's a shame the paperwork doesn't tell you more, but Peepers sounds like a great cat regardless. What a cute personality he has :)

i am almost certain he is a ragdoll. do they often mix siamese or ragdolls? and do siamese make alergic reactions not so bad as ragdolls?

the paperwork that came with him should have but didnt show anything of his previous owners. Peepers, thats him, is adorable and he took over the whole couch and got off if anyone came near. wanted it all to himself

Hi Kyle,

Without knowing his lineage, it's impossible to say, but he very well may have some ragdoll or possibly Siamese in his bloodline. He sounds adorable.

I wonder if you could track him back through his micro-chip and get some additional information about his parents. The initial owners should be registered through the chip somehow.

my cat is also 14 pounds, and i have no idea about his past. we got him when he was 6. he had a micro chip so he must have been semi-expensive

i have a cat that goes limp and acts like a ragdoll.all his characteristics point to that he is a ragdoll, except that he has black fur (has the mitted formation), yellow eyes, and short fir also people that are alergic to cats come to my house and he is far better for them than most cats. what do u think he is? how much ragdoll is he? (if any)

Hi Carol,

Andre sounds absolutely adorable. I love that he is clumsy. That is unusual for cats and makes him unique.

I love my ragdoll Andre! He has added a companion cat that I can depend on always being there for a laugh and snuggle. Andre is clumsie but his adorable large feet and facial expressions make up for that 10 fold. Andre is a keeper! I am lucky to have him.

Ruth,

My next cat will likely be a ragdoll. I love affectionate cats and this breed seems to be one of the most affectionate. It sounds like you've done a great job of training Neo.

I have 2 Ragdolls and they are so loving. No cat should be declawed. They are very clever cats and are easily trained to use a post. Both my kitties shed quite a bit. Neo fretches and i started clicker training him. Jasper is very lazy and lets Neo wash him. Both are around 20 pounds. Recomend This breed if you like fluffy clever cats that follow you around everywhere.

Hi Liz,

We try to offer articles on this site that feature both sides of the declawing issue, so everyone can make an informed decision. I understand your concern and commitment to not have your cats declawed. Do you own ragdolls?

-- Contributed by: LoriSoard

My personal opinion is that anyone who suggests having a domestic cat declawed for their own convenience should not own cats and should have their own toenails pulled out to see how they like it. It's an inhumane and cruel practice.

Hi, Rebekka. Steel and Ting Tong sound like gorgeous cats. I love cats because each one has such an individual personality. I'm sure they are great companions!

I have a cute cat thats a mix between a ragdoll and a tabby. i had his mother who had a litter of 5. the mom and 3 kittens were adopted. but i kept steel and ting tong. steel looks like a regular tabby, but ting has the size of a ragdoll and the fur color of a tabby and hes really laid back while his brother is hyper
