Hi Judy,
Since she is a barn cat, she may have picked up some type of communicable disease. I would go ahead and take her to the vet or have him come to you. You don't want the kittens to get infected. Hopefully, she just has a minor infection that can be treated with antibiotics. Whatever the case, she definitely needs medical treatment from the symptoms you've described.

If the cat has a cough and is not drinking water, that is a sign of a serious illness. Cats are prone to upper respiratory infections and it sounds like this cat has one. She needs to be treated with antibiotics prescribed by the vet. Also, there are some diseases out there, such as Cat Flu that can cause these symptoms as well as some other diseases. She really needs to be tested. If you are able to get her to the vet, I would do so as soon as possible.

-- Contributed by: cough and not drinking waterHi Mark,
With her advanced age, it could be caused by any number of things. Cats are prone to upper respiratory infections and that could make her feel pretty lousy, so it could just be that.
However, since she is not eating or drinking and is lethargic, I would make a trip to the vet immediately. Describe all of her symptoms. He will likely check her over and perhaps take a blood test or two to try to determine quickly what might be going on with her.
Hope she feels better soon.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardDespite being 15, my cat is usually a very energetic cat and is usually very playful, but as of 3 days ago her behavior has changed dramatically. She wont drink water, eat food and is constantly hiding and sleeping the entire day away. Her nose was running yesterday and today is fluttering her head constantly. We took her to the vet the day before she started symptoms and told us that she was one of the healthiest 15 year olds he's ever seen. But he persisted to put her of a heartworm pill for once a month, and now she is sick. I was wondering if this just sounds like a normal cold, or if this is just a result of the pill, or something potentially worse. Thank you, and I'll be looking forward to your response. Mark

You need to get him to the vet immediately, even if it is an emergency vet. It sounds like he is in renal failure. There may still be something they can do for him, including steroid shots and medicatins, but without treatment, he will likely die. Please check back and let us know what the vet says. Sometimes, in older cats, their organs just begin to shut down like this.
-- Contributed by: LoriSoardMy 16 yr old cat has recently become very thin and lost a lot of weight. We got a new puppy 5 months ago. The cat started drinking alot of water. His appetite has always been pretty good. Lately, he will "disappear" for a day and ultimately have some kind of accident, whether it be throwing up the massive amount of water he just drank to squatting and relieving himself of #1 & #2,not in the cat box. For the past 4 days he has been laying in his bed,not moving around very much. He will let me sit & hold him for a long while, but wants to get up and will take a few steps and urinate wherever he is. I thought this was it,until last night when I was eating lasagne,he wanted a bite. Of course,I figured, why not! He ate quite a bit and I even put some in his dish this morning. His bowl is just about empty today! I am trying to make appt with the vet,but not very successful.

Cats do get colds and upper respiratory infections. Unless she is showing other symptoms, I'd probably just watch her for now. However, if you notice any of the following, I'd get her to the vet:
- Repeated sneezing, wheezing or coughing.
- Lack of appetite or increased appetite.
- Lack of thirst or increased thirst.
- Weight loss.
- Lethargy.
Yesterday I noticed my cat had a runny nose, it's so runny it forms almost like a water droplet looking substance at the end of her nose. Does anyone know what this could or if it is very serious?
