Hi Diana,

No. When the vet spays your cat, all the reproductive organs should be removed. This will eliminate heat cycles. Is she showing symptoms?

can a cat still get in heaty after being spayed...she was done in may

Hi Vicki,

The cost can vary widely, depending upon your area. For example, in our area, I was able to call and get quotes that ranged from over $300 to just under $100. Since you are on a fixed income, you may be able to get some aid. Phone your local Humane Society and inquire about programs to get cats spayed and neutered for those on fixed incomes. Also, some animal shelters offer clinics for shots and spaying/neutering at an extreme discount.

If the place you phone doesn't offer discounts or clinics, ask them if they know of one that does. If you keep asking, you're likely to find a program that will work for you. You may even want to call animal control in your area and see what they have to offer. Good luck!

i am on a fixed incom with a cat how much does spaying generally costs?????

Hi Amy,

I would let her rest. She is likely very sore and scared, because she isn't sure why she is hurting. Leave a bit of food and water near the couch and she'll likely come out and eat it when everyone goes to bed. If she still isn't eating in a couple of days, call your vet. If she hadn't drank any water by tomorrow, you may want to go ahead and call to be on the safe side.

Hi Cyndee,

Some weight gain is normal, but I would be worried if her eyes are dilated all the time. Try turning the lights on when she is in a dark room and see if her pupils grow smaller. There is absolutely no shame in getting a second opinion if you are still worried about your cat. Perhaps she has an infection from the surgery or some other type of reaction. You know her better than anyone, so trust your instincts.

Hi Linda,

There is always a risk with anesthesia, particularly with small animals. However, every vet will give you a different answer on the optimum time to spay or neuter your cat. You'll probably want to do so before the first heat, which is usually around five or six months, so I wouldn't wait too long after the kitten was three or four months old.

Since we have had our cat spayed 2 months ago her stomach is bloated and her eyes are dialated. We have had her to a vet but they say nothing is wrong. I am still concerned. she just isn't the same.

I have 2 foster kittens, a male and a female. Our local SPCA wants to spay and neuter them soon. They are only 10 weeks old and at their last weigh in one was 3 Lb and 14 oz and the other was 2 lb and 12 oz. Is there a recommended weight and/or age that the kittens should be at before the operations. Will there be any problems with the kittens if the procedures are done earlier rather than later?

Hi Kim,

Is it possible that she had another type of surgery and actually has not been spayed? I would ask the vet to perform a sonogram, which will confirm that her uterus and ovaries have been removed. If they have, then you can look to hormonal issues causing her heat-like behavior and have her tested for that problem.

i took my female cat to be spayed. the vet called back and said she already had been, noting the scar.but she drives us crazy every month or 6 weeks with her howling calling and rubbing. what can we do?

-- Contributed by: kim

Hi Jim,

She shouldn't, as the spaying removed the ovaries and uterus. The ovaries are what create the hormones and send the cat into heat, so without those there should be no heat cycle. Some males will still try to "mate" with a female cat, however, as a form of dominance. If the other cat has diseases, your cat can catch them, so it's best to keep her indoors if possible.

Can our spayed female cat still emit an "in heat" aroma and become an attraction to tom cats?

-- Contributed by: Jim

Hi Mary,

Most vets like to wait a few weeks. It is probably best to wait until the mother has weaned her kittens, just to be on the safe side. However, this is going to depend a lot on the cat, your situation and your vet's preferences.

How soon after giving birth should my cat be spayed?

Hi, I just had my 2 girl cats fixed going on 6 days ago. They are 10 months old. One of the girls pulled her own stiches out yesterday!!! I just noticed it when i looked at her belly. She not hurting. She feels just fine. And the cut is closed. Should i be worried???? The vet said to bring them back in about 12 to 14 days. So i was thinking of calling them tomorrow. Couldn't go today b/cuz i had to work!I'm wondering it the cut will heal just fine without the stiches being there?? I think the vet didn't do that good of a job if my own cat can pull them out!!! I mean they were stwisted and tyed!! So what do you think????? :)

  • Hi Lisa,

Some cats are very determined to remove stitches. I'm glad the area looks like it's healing well. Keep a close eye to make sure the incision doesn't open back up, and do call your vet to let him know what happened.

Thanks for your question, and hopefully there won't be any complications to worry about.

Hi Daniel,

The cost to spay your cat will vary by the area and by the vet. In our area, such a surgery usually runs around $120.00. That cost be be less or more, depending on pre-op tests, medications you authorize during the surgery, and post-op options.

I would pull out the yellow pages and call around to different veterinarians for a quote. Also, you may want to phone the local Humane Society to see if they offer any discount clinics for sterilization.

I was wondering how much a Ligation would cost on a cat. If there is an estimate on how much it is, I would proudly like to know about it.

Thanks!

Hi Lynda,

Boy do I understand your frustration. We recently went through the same thing with a dog we were having spayed. It's hard to know what is the right thing to do. I can tell you what we chose, but ultimately you have to do what you feel is right for your pet. I can give you a little more info though, and maybe that will help with the decision.

First, the IV is there in case they have to medicate during the surgery. This might be necessary if the cat were to have an adverse reaction to the anesthesia for example. If the cost is minimal, I would probably get this simply because it is a safety issue.

On the blood work, we chose to skip that. We had a healthy puppy who had all her vaccinations and the blood work was very costly that they wanted to do. You may want to look at family history for your cat and decide if this is worth the cost or not. Be sure to specifically ask them what the benefits of having the blood work done are. The blood work typically checks for anemia and infection and/or kidney and liver functions. These can cause serious complications if they are a problem. Statistically, in an otherwise healthy cat, they usually aren't.

As for leaving or bringing home, it depends. Is there staff there in the evenings and all night to monitor your cat? Some vet's offices do not keep someone there with your cat overnight. Your cat would be better off at home in that case where you can watch her carefully and seek treatment if necessary. If there is staff there, then are they a licensed veterinarian that can treat your cat if necessary or get in touch with the vet quickly?

Finally, I would probably do the pain meds for your cat's comfort. They can be pretty uncomfortable after the surgery. Most cats come through this surgery without any problem, so try not to worry so much, but it is smart to get all the facts and make an informed decision. Your cat is lucky to have you as an owner :)

Hi! I've cld a # of vet offices re spaying of our 2yr old cat. some say IV and bld wk is optional. Other say it is mandatory. Some say they must stay ovrnight; others say the cat is hm the same day. Some use pain meds, before, during, ad afer surgery. Others don't. I don't know what is in the best interest of my cat. Can you advise?

-- Contributed by: Lynda

Hi Kathia,

To the best of my knowledge, once the ovaries and uterus are removed, the cat is no longer able to come into heat.

Did you own the cat at the time of the spaying, or are you relying on someone else's information? In any case, I wouldn't turn her outside right now unless you plan to stay with her. If there was some kind of miscommunication you might wind up with an unplanned litter.

Thanks for your question.

Can a spaying female cat still go into heat? My female cat is spayed but she is acting weird and go into position for matting, wants to run away. There is a toncat that comes around the house and I don't know if they want to flight or make up. This is because I let her out sometimes for a 1 hour or so. Do you know the answer?
