Hi Debbra,

Since he is only doing this when you pick him up, I think you're right that it is some sort of anxiety attack. Because he is a wild cat, he may have some unusual behaviors like this.

As long as he lets you pet him and feed him, etc., I would just try not to pick him up. If you want to transition him to the indoors, you may have to isolate him for a week in a small room with litter box and food and water. We have some wonderful articles on this site about feral cats that might be helpful.

Hi Arlene,

Distemper can be highly contagious and is common among strays. I would take the cat straight to the vet and have him tested for diseases before you bring him home. That will keep your huskey safe. Also, have the vet treat him for fleas and worms.

It's wonderful to give the cat a home, just important to do so cautiously to protect your current pets.

Hi, Kimberly,

I'm very sorry about the kitten. Without an autopsy, it really is impossible to find out what was the cause of death. My concern is that it might have been distemper, because of his age. Is it possible to have his body tested or too late?

If it was distemper, I would hesitate at bringing another pet into the household. The distemper virus can live for up to a year and infect any new pets you bring into the home. Kittens and older cats are particularly susceptible, but it can also be passed to other species.

I don't want to scare you, because it could have been almost anything that made him ill at this point. I just want to urge caution. You may also want to read our article on Distemper for some additional symptoms and tips and see if anything fits your situation. Let us know if you have any other questions. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

I had a kitten that was about 4 months old, and about a month ago he started getting sick. He wouldn't eat that much any more nor would he play . As the weeks went by he just started breathing heavily and eventually he started breathing only through his mouch. He could barely walk and he couldn't sleep either and then he just stoped eating and drinking. He eventually died. I just wanted to know if you could maybe tell me what he might of had. I was told that it might of been leukemia but I was wondering, I had a gas leek in my house and it seemed like he started getting sick a few days after that. Could this of been why he was the way he was? Thank you

Hi, Net. I'm sorry to hear that your kitten is having strokes or seizures. Although cats can have epilepsy and other disorders, it is possible the kitten has gotten into a poison substance. Because cats have livers that do not detoxify some substances, common household items can make them ill. Things that can make your cat show symptoms like this include insecticides, mothballs and antifreeze. Since the cat is a stray, you may also want to limit contact with other felines in your house and have her tested for Feline Leukemia as seizures can be a symptom of that disease.

I once had a cat go into seizures. She simply shook all over and could barely walk. I rushed her to the veterinarian and after some discussion it was discovered that my then five-year-old had put dog flea medicine on the cat. It was so strong that it caused an adverse reaction.

I do recommend that you go ahead and take your cat to the vet as soon as possible. A professional will be able to determine through testing and examination what is going on with the cat. If the cat has gotten into a poison substance, the vet will know what to do to treat the cat and minimize damage to organs. If the cat is has Epilepsy, there are medications that can help her manage this illness and have less episodes. Please let us know how it turns out and if the cat is okay.
