A cat has followed me home, I've tried to look for the owner with no luck. My kids want to keep the cat, well kitten can't be much older that 4 mths. Is there anything I should do to get her used to her new home? Got all the essentials, just not sure when I should let her go out. Never had a cat before and have no idea what to do with them!!!!

Hi Barbara,

Is there any way to find out exactly where your neighbor dropped her? Your best bet would be to pass out flyers and let the neighbors in that area know that you are looking for her. It is possible that someone has taken her in, if she was a friendly cat. Good luck! I hope you find her soon.

Hi My cat was taken away and abandoned about 50kms from my house by one of my neighbours. This was 6 months ago,she was both a house and outdoor cat. She was spayed and was 6 years old.Do you think she will ever find her way home? By the way I live in the suburbs. Regards, Barbara

Hi Hillary,

There is some risk with any vaccine, but the protection it offers outweighs the risks. Although it is unlikely the cat was vaccinated if it is a stray, there is of course the possibility that the cat is simply lost and has indeed been vaccinated. Since there aren't a lot of other cats around, I'd probably stick with the basics and get a rabies and distemper shot. You can discuss other vaccines with your veterinarian and see if he or she thinks others are necessary at this time.

Good luck. I hope you're able to bring the cat indoors soon. It really is a safer place for them.

hello, yesterday we found a sweet cat living underneath of our lake house. We want to take him to get his shots since he may have to live out there for now but what if his previous familly already got his shots for him? Will a possible "double dose" harm him? I'm not to worried about him being outside right now because there is little to no traffic (the only road is a dirt road that you can not drive faster than five miles an hour, and our backyard is an entire peach orchard. As soon as we get our apartment we want to bring him in.

Hi Cynthia,

This is a touchy subject. You risk offending them and then you have to live in the same neighborhood. On the other hand, the cat's health is at risk. I would perhaps print out this article and some similar ones and casually share it with your neighbors. You may not have to say anything. They may take the hint.

If not, I think your solution of taking care of the cat in inclement weather and trying to help it is a good alternative.

Good luck!

I enjoyed this article and can certainly identify with the cat not really being a stray. My neighbors do not seem to have any conscience where their cats are concerned and leave them out in below freezing temperatures. I feed them and am currently housing one since tonight's temperature is 25. How do I approach these people and tell them to take care of their pets?

Hi Tracy,

It's wonderful that you're giving Lucky a safe new home, but you are smart to get his health cleared first. This is for the protection of your current cat as some diseases are highly communicable and have no cure.

When you do bring him inside, remember to keep him isolated for about a week or two to allow your current cat to get used to his scent and presence in the home. Then, introduce them slowly and see how it goes. Good luck! Lucky sounds like a perfect birthday present to me :)

My cay Bootsie was 6 weeks old when we found him . There is a abandoned house next door and there are a lot of cats over there now. Bootsie is 2 yeras old now and he is wonderful. A stray cat has come to trust me. I feed the cats.I cat pet this cat and hold him. He is a sweetie. we have decided we will give him a home. He has a appt. to be fixed and get his shots etc..on Nov.3(my birthday. It is starting to cost a small fortune feeding these feral/stray cats, but it is not their fault and I cannot allow them to starve. I buy a $10 bag of dry food that lasts a week or so. I buy some wet food on occasion when their is a sale. There is a lady who has been coming for at least 4 years now(3 to 4 times a week) to leave food for these cats. She brings them wet food mostly so they got spoiled with that. They will choose that first over the dry if it is there. They eat the dry food if that is all that is there.Wish me luck. Actually we have named our new kitty LUCKY. I cannot allow him inside the apartment until he is cleared by the vet and fixed etc.. so Nov 3rd he will be coming inside.

Hi Jodie,

Likely the kitten will warm up with time. Make sure he or she knows where the litter box is. It might not be a bad idea to contain him in a room with that box until you're sure he knows where to use the litter. Keep us posted on how it goes.

a few days ago, i brought a stray kitten and its still a bit wary. we feed it whiskas and water, and only keep it in the living room until it gets used to us.

Hi Iko,

If you'd like to keep the cat, you should get it tested for any communicable diseases that might be transmitted to your other pets. If those check out okay, then you should bring it indoors if at all possible. The kitten will be much safer there and you can begin getting to know each other. Good luck!

Hello! Me and my friend found a stray cat near my house few days ago. It was very thin and wary of all humans and cats, but it seemed to be more scared of cat. It was very small in size but we dont know how old it is. We fed it canned food and milk for the past couple of days, and it now recognises us. We call it Girlgirl, and it knows its name. We cannot bring it home and it is still wandering around outside. Should we bring it to a animal shelter? But we have gotten rather attached to the cat. What should we do with it?

Hi Chancee,

The rule of thumb is that if a stray cat comes to your home and you feed it, then it belongs to you unless an owner shows up. So, if you want to keep the cat, feed it. If not, then take it to a no kill shelter and they will find him/her a home.

i have a cat and i need help should i give it food or not?

Hi Melissa,

He sounds like a beautiful cat. You may want to search for no kill shelters in your area or check out the local pet supply stores to see if they offer adoption programs. This is likely the best way to help him find a forever home.

I have several strays on my block...one in particular boggled my mind as he walked right up to my boyfriend and myself as we were standing on our porch. He also wanted to come into our house. He's a beautiful little red tabby who looks to be only 6 - 8 mths. old. We have two already that were strays a friend had found, and I would love to take in this little one and help him. I am going to try to trap him (which I think will be easy to do), and try to find his owner or call Animal Services to help. He's too sweet and adorable and young to live a life on the cold hard streets. He was definitely either lost, or thrown away (heinous)...

I think cat's have an underground newspaper that directs them to my house! All my cats have been strays, finding their way to me. Last night at 2:30am a totie colored young adult was meowing on my deck. My 4 cats that don't go out ever were meowing back. All mine are spayed/neutered. When I opened the door it ran to me, purring & throwing itself on me. Never have I seen such affection immediately upon meeting! I fed it because I thought that is why it was crying. All was quiet until this morning. It was again crying under my car. Since I have baby bunnies just out of their nest since yesterday running around I decided to feed her & set her up comfortably in the garage while I called vets, shelters, newspapers & even the local tv station. The station will put the found ad on tv for 2 days for free! This was a loved housecat. I dragged neighbors in to see if they could identify the lovely lady. No luck. Tonight we are making fliers to put in the stores and on signs. I put found ads on line too. I didn't want to leave her outside because I didn't want her to get hit by a car. We live in the country with a big college here. My vet said a lot of kids get pets & abandon them when they leave in the summer. Maybe this is what happened. We have 2 Golden Retrievers also. If it wasn't for the cost of proper care for our pets, we would gladly keep her. Hopefully, the owner or someone who will love her will be found.
